Direct Energy, an electricity retailer in Houston, will layoff 54 employees this fall, Centrica, its parent company reported in a letter to the state.
A first round of 20 layoffs at Direct Energy’s Greenway Plaza location will begin Aug. 30, and another 34 workers will be laid off starting Sept. 16. The location will remain open, the company wrote in the letter to the Texas Workforce Commission.
Direct Energy is “restructuring” its operations to become more efficient and remain price competitive, spokesperson Melissa Hand said in a statement.
The electricity retailer previously announced it would relocate from the Greenway Plaza in April 2021 to the Houston Center, which is undergoing a major renovation.
Direct Energy has 930 employees in Houston.
