Nuclear plant in Ohio again making electricity

By: Associated Press |

A nuclear power plant in northeast Ohio has resumed making electricity after automatically shutting down a week ago during a routine maintenance procedure.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reports (http://bit.ly/1yFV6rZ ) the Perry nuclear power plant about 35 miles northeast of Cleveland automatically shut down Oct. 20 after operators tried to switch the reactor’s “feedwater” pumps from one electrical circuit to another. The pumps supply purified water to the reactor to keep its fuel rods submerged and cool.

A spokeswoman for plant owner FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Co. says emergency cooling equipment activated automatically as designed. She has said there were no injuries or radiation emissions.

Engineers traced the power failure to an electrical circuit card in a power inverter that will be replaced in a normal refueling shutdown.
