A scam is making the rounds among customers of New York State Electric & Gas Corp., NYSEG has warned. Callers say they represent the utility company and claim that service will be cut off unless they buy a “GreenDot MoneyPak Card.”
NYSEG will never ask a customer to buy a debit card to make a payment, said Mark Lynch, president of the company, in a news release. Also, NYSEG will not call a customer for payment if an account is in good standing, he said.
If a customer does need to make an urgent payment, it can be done by calling NYSEG directly at 1-800-600-2275. And, if customers have received a call for an allegedly overdue payment, they can call NYSEG at 1-800-572-1111. If customers believe they have actually been scammed out of money, they should call their local police and notify the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov, Lynch said.
