Many Texans affected by the COVID-19 pandemic have been protected from having their electricity disconnected due to non-payment. After the governor declared a state of emergency in March, the Texas PUC initiated a plan so customers could self-enroll if they were facing economic hardships. According to this plan, the PUC ordered all retail providers to suspend disconnections and grant deferred payment plans when requested by residential customers. This kept the power on through the hottest days of the summer for over 600,000 Texans.
However, the benefits for this program only extend through September 30th. With that date only two weeks away, any customers who have been relying on the moratorium need to contact their provider to start arranging payment plans.
